Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy is an experiential approach to treatment in which humans and horses work together within the healing process. . In EFP, horses serve as active partners in the therapeutic work. Because they are biologically sensitive to the environment around them, horses are always authentically present. Sharing space with the horses at Stable Ground Wellness can foster learning, inspiration and healing. Unlike traditional therapy, our office may be a sunlight stall, a walk through the woods, or a shaded seat under the apple tree.   

Because this process is multi-dimensional, the connections established in our brain with this type of treatment resonate deeply both in the moment and in allowing for transference to other areas of our lives.  There is no riding involved in Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy. Gains are made through the human-equine relationships established. There is no previous experience with horses necessary to engage in EFP! 

Benefits of Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy include relaxation and mindfulness, improved self-awareness, interpersonal effectiveness, development of effective communication skills, adaptability, and improved confidence to name a few. Research has shown a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure related to interactions with equines. EFP can be used to treat a variety of different mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, social struggles, PTSD, and substance abuse. 

Equine Facilitated Learning

EFL is an emerging field in which horses and humans work together as guides and facilitators to help people (individuals or groups) enhance their life skills, improve emotional fitness and increase self-awareness. Much like EFP, EFL can help clients improve relational skills, reduce stress and anxiety, and discover present moment awareness. EFL can create a sense of calm, quiet and wellness in body, mind and spirit. You might think of EFL as life coaching with horse and human facilitators!
